A Civil Engineer / Geologist / Geotechnical Engineer with a minimum 5 years relevant experience is required to fill a position in London North Eastern. The post, based in the historic city of York will help support and lead the Civil Engineering department all technical matters relating to slope stability, assessment and monitoring. LNE territory has circa 15000 No. embankments, cuttings (both soil and rock), natural slopes and sea defences. These extend over an area including Berwick to London Kings Cross, Skipton to Skegness and Matlock, Derby, Leicester totalling approximately 2000 linear miles.

The geotechnical team within Network Rail LNE Territory are responsible for the management of approximately 15000 assets totalling approximately 2000 linear miles, a role critical to the safe performance of the railway.

You will work as part of the team, using your civil and/or geological/geotechnical and management skills to help support and lead the department in all technical matters relating to slope stability, assessment and monitoring. While the role does not include the actual undertaking of these tasks, it is expected that you are suitably skilled and experienced such that suitable direction and guidance can be provided to deliver best value. The results of these exercises impact directly on work repair and maintenance instructions and a £10M annual budget.

The role requires a combination of office and site activities, site activities include validation of reports, examinations, contractor liaison, hand back of completed works etc. You will be as comfortable discussing deep technical matters with your peers as you will be explaining the importance and relevance of defects to non technical depot staff.

Essential

  • Qualified to minimum HNC/HND level in civil or geotechnical engineering
  • Several years experience of railway civil engineering, with proven abilities in earthworks examination, evaluation, maintenance and repair
  • A sound knowledge of earthworks engineering policies and standards.
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
