Working for the Infrastructure Investment Department, you will be working within the national Programme Engineering Manager Civils team which is based in Swindon. However, consideration will be given to this role being out-based in one of the following Network Rail territory offices: Swindon, Birmingham, Manchester, London, York, or Glasgow.

The key purpose of the Infrastructure Investment department is to deliver renewals and enhancements through improved specifications and utilisation of resources and a professional management of projects while maintaining a high level of efficiency.

The planning of activities, resources, plant and equipment for Infrastructure Investment is integrated with the requirements of the operational railway through area planning and territory delivery planning units. The concept of delivery is one of integrated project teams co-located with Engineering and Contracts and Procurement.

The Infrastructure Investment department aims to:

You will be responsible for the engineering development of allocated proposals from clarification of remit to project completion developing the engineering solutions to proposals to best satisfy the business case.

You will be working within a team that is responsible for:

  • Providing professional functional leadership for engineers within the national programme.
  • Developing engineering competence levels across the programme.
  • Leading on high profile civil engineering initiatives such as developing standard designs and optimising specifications.
  • Developing and improving our engineering management and approval processes.
  • Supporting the territory based development and delivery teams in the process of identifying optimum engineering solutions.
  • Managing the delivery of allocated engineering and project development activities
  • Identifying and promoting design and construction best practice and innovation.

The following are essential to be considered for the role:

  • An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
  • IRSE Principles Designer licence or equivalent relevant to the discipline.
  • A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
  • An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
  • An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
  • CDM, Auditing and risk assessment competencies.

The following are desirable skills:

  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt.
  • Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
  • Experience in design, installation and maintenance.
  • Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.
  • Yellow book course.
